The landscape of Canadian immigration is constantly evolving, leading to the discontinuation of several programs over time. It’s important for potential immigrants to stay informed about which pathways remain open for application. This page provides an in-depth look at caregiver programs that were once available but have now ceased operations.

While extensive details about these past programs are available online, please remember that they are currently closed and no longer receiving applications.

Caregiver Programs

Live-In Caregiver Program Overview

The Live-In Caregiver Program was established to allow foreign nationals to come to Canada on temporary work permits, residing with Canadian families and taking on caregiver roles. This program stopped accepting new applications in 2014.

Caring for Children Pathway

Designed under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, the Caring for Children Pathway enabled eligible foreign nationals to secure Canadian work permits if they had a job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment from a Canadian employer. Applicants needed a minimum of 24 months’ full-time work experience in Canada as a home child care provider (NOC 4411) within the last four years before application. The pathway ceased accepting applications in June 2019 and was succeeded by the Home Child Care Provider Pilot.

Caring for People with High Medical Needs Pathway

Also a part of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, the Caring for People with High Medical Needs Pathway allowed foreign nationals to get Canadian work permits if they received an LMIA-backed job offer. To qualify, 24 months of full-time experience in one of the following in-demand occupations was necessary: NOC 3012, NOC 3233, NOC 3413, or NOC 4412. This pathway stopped accepting applications in June 2019 and was succeeded by the Home Support Worker Pilot.

Interim Pathway for Caregivers

The Interim Pathway for Caregivers offered a temporary solution for foreign caregivers with Canadian experience to apply for permanent residence. Available from March 4 to June 4, 2019, it provided a pathway to permanent residency for individuals with Canadian work experience as home child care providers or home support workers. Although the program ended on October 8, 2019, processing of some applications was delayed due to COVID-19.

For those interested in immigrating to Canada, understanding the various programs and pathways is crucial for finding the right opportunity to work and live in the country.
