Understanding the International Student Program
The International Student Process is broken down into four main stages to help ensure clarity and allow easy tracking of your application as it advances:
Step One: Select Your Academic Pathway Our Educational Advisor will work closely with you to identify the right academic course that aligns with your interests and career ambitions. Factors like duration, cost, location, and course structure will be considered when recommending programs.
Step Two: School Application Once you’ve settled on the appropriate study level and education program with your Educational Advisor, we will assist you in preparing and submitting your school application. Securing a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada is essential before applying for a study permit.
Step Three: Study Permit Application With your acceptance letter ready, you can proceed to apply for a study permit through Canadian immigration. If your chosen institution is in Quebec, obtaining a certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) is necessary before applying for the study permit. Your Educational Advisor will support you in organizing and submitting your immigration application. Additionally, if you have a spouse, they might qualify for an open work permit.
Step Four: Explore Immigration Opportunities After obtaining a Canadian educational qualification, you’ll be well-prepared to explore permanent residency options. Since Canadian immigration programs frequently change, predicting which pathway suits you best is challenging. After completing your study program, our team will inform you of all available options for pursuing permanent residency.
The International Student Process by Immigration to Canada delivers ongoing support throughout the student application journey. Leveraging our extensive knowledge in immigration, you will not only gain expert guidance but will also foster a lasting relationship with our team. Prospective Canadian international students are invited to complete a complimentary online assessment to begin their journey. One of our specialists will review your assessment and reach out to discuss the findings.
Exploring educational opportunities in Canada as an international student offers numerous advantages! From campus initiatives aimed at integrating students and enhancing their academic experiences to immigration programs designed to streamline applications for permanent residency, Canada is acclaimed for its commitment to international education. With a growing international student population, Canadian institutions and government bodies are implementing strategies to enrich student life and simplify the pathway for them to live and work in Canada after graduation.
Canadian universities, colleges, and institutions provide diverse programs that support international student integration into the campus community, including English language assistance programs. Many institutions also offer attractive financial aid packages to international students with impressive academic records. Furthermore, most international students in Canada are automatically allowed to work part-time while studying.
Additionally, Canada provides a post-graduation work permit that enables most international students to continue living and working in Canada once they complete their studies. Besides the resources available during academic enrollment, Canadian immigration authorities at both federal and provincial levels offer pathways for international graduates to transition to becoming Canadian permanent residents.
Canada’s standing as a premier destination for international study continues to rise and shows no sign of waning. For those seeking a vibrant environment to further their education or begin a new life in a prosperous nation, Canada presents an ideal choice for educational pursuits and immigration opportunities.
Interested in the TD International Student GIC Program? Follow these four simple steps to participate and set yourself up for success in Canada:
Step 1: Apply Online
Begin your journey by filling out an online application to open both a TD Student Chequing Account and a TD International Student GIC. Once your application is submitted and your identification is verified, you will receive details about your new TD Student Chequing Account along with wire transfer instructions.
Step 2: Make a Wire Transfer
Send a wire transfer (or multiple transfers) to fund your TD Student Chequing Account with at least CAD $20,635 plus any fees for incoming wires. It’s crucial that TD receives these funds within 90 days of your account being opened.
You can also send additional amounts at any time before your arrival in Canada. Remember to factor in any fees from your originating bank, potential exchange rate differences, and the TD incoming wire fee, as noted in the TD Service Fee Schedule.
Step 3: Fund Your GIC
Once TD has received your wire transfer, they will invest CAD $20,635 in a TD International Student GIC. A confirmation email will be sent to you, and any extra funds will remain in your TD Student Chequing Account.
Step 4: In-Branch Verification and Initial GIC Payout
After you arrive in Canada, schedule an appointment at one of TD’s 1,000+ branches to verify your identity, complete the necessary paperwork, and activate your accounts.
Your first payout, along with any accrued interest, will be redeemed from your GIC and deposited into your TD Student Chequing Account. The rest of your funds will be distributed according to the GIC Payment Schedule in equal installments over the next 10 months, including any accrued interest.
The duration of the application process for studying in Canada depends on several factors. First and foremost, consider your desired start date. Most Canadian academic programs commence in September or January, although some exceptions exist. Your chosen start date will influence how long the application process takes. Additionally, it’s crucial to identify the application deadline for your chosen program.
Each study program in Canada has its own unique application deadlines. Some deadlines may be just a few months before the program begins, while others might require you to apply eight to nine months in advance. To ensure successful admission, our team at Immigration to Canada needs ample time to prepare and submit your application. Once we have your intended start date and are aware of your program’s application deadlines, we can provide a better estimate of the overall process duration.
The timing of your immigration application following the completion of your program depends largely on the specific pathway and your eligibility. Canada’s immigration system offers various routes for international students aiming to secure permanent residency. Many Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) provide opportunities for international graduates to apply right after finishing their studies. Additionally, if you satisfy certain criteria, such as having a valid job offer or relevant Canadian work experience, other immigration options may be accessible.
A popular path for international students is the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This permit allows graduates to remain in Canada and work for a designated period. After acquiring one year of full-time, skilled work experience in the country, individuals may qualify for the Canadian Experience Class through the Express Entry system.
You must demonstrate adequate funds to cover both your cost of living in Canada for one year—including housing and transportation—and tuition fees for your study program for one year. The required amount varies based on your specific program, institution, and location.
Immigration to Canada’s International Student Program does not assist with PhD applications. PhD programs require personalized, research-oriented applications that demand comprehensive subject knowledge, beyond the scope of our advisory services.
While IELTS is not mandatory, Immigration to Canada strongly recommends it for a stronger application. Exceptions exist, but without 3-4 years of study in an English-speaking country, language test results such as TOEFL, Academic IELTS, or Duolingo (due to COVID-19) are advisable to fulfill application requirements.
Yes, you can, but including family on your study permit application might affect the decision. Since study permits are temporary, you must convince a visa officer you'll leave Canada after your studies. Bringing your entire family might raise doubts about your intent to leave, potentially leading to a denial.
Immigration to Canada supports and guides securing study authorization in Canada. Study permits allow students to work while studying, and recent updates permit working over 40 hours a week until December 2023. However, we do not offer direct employment services as they are outside our legal scope.
While we provide information on student housing services available through educational institutions, Immigration to Canada does not directly assist with finding accommodations. We ensure you’re informed about available resources but arranging housing is outside our direct services.
This largely depends on your field of study. If you have specific job preferences, our educational counselors at Immigration to Canada will consider these when advising you on suitable schools and programs.
