Working on Campus in Canada

Full-time students enrolled in post-secondary institutions in Canada can work on campus without needing a work permit. This exemption is applicable as long as the student holds a valid study permit and maintains enrollment at their respective school.

This rule also includes positions such as teaching assistants or research assistants. “On-campus work” is defined as employment at a location within the property’s boundaries of the tertiary institution where the student is registered. If the institution operates multiple campuses, students are permitted to work at any campus location provided they are in the same city. However, if campuses are located in different cities, employment is restricted to the campus where the student is officially registered as a full-time student.

International Student

Furthermore, students might have the opportunity to work off-campus without a work permit if the employer has an established connection with the student’s educational institution.

To engage in employment within Canada, students are required to obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN). Application for a SIN involves presenting a study permit and an employment agreement.

Opportunities for On-Campus Work in Canada

At Immigration to Canada, we understand the importance of gaining work experience while studying. You can begin working in Canada only after you have started your study program. Working before your academic program commences is prohibited.

International students with a study permit that includes a condition allowing on- or off-campus work are eligible to work on campus without needing a separate work permit, provided they meet certain criteria.

To work on your educational institution’s campus, ensure you are:

Please note that not all programs available at private institutions may qualify.

Part-Time Students in the Final Semester

If you have maintained full-time student status throughout the duration of your program and are part-time only in your final semester to complete remaining coursework, you are still allowed to work an unlimited number of hours on campus.

Who Cannot Work On-Campus

You must cease on-campus employment if:

  • You discontinue full-time studies, unless it’s your final semester and you comply with additional requirements.
  • Your study permit expires.
  • You are on an authorized leave of absence from your educational program.
  • You are in the process of transferring schools and are not currently enrolled in courses.

You may only resume on-campus work once you are actively enrolled in studies and meet all necessary conditions for on-campus employment.

Working Locations

When working “on-campus,” you’re allowed to work in any building at your educational institution’s campus. If your school happens to have multiple campuses, typically, you are permitted to work only at the campus where you are studying.

Off-campus employment is possible under particular conditions:

In these circumstances, you are permitted to work at libraries, hospitals, or research facilities associated with your school, even if they’re not located on campus. It’s important to note that if you work in environments where public health safety is crucial, like hospitals, a medical examination might be required unless you have already completed one.
